A common beginner pattern looks like this:
Monday: spend all the speedups because a building finished.
Tuesday: spend all the shards because a hero can be upgraded.
Wednesday: spend all the gear materials because the red dot is annoying.
Thursday: an event starts that would have rewarded every one of those actions.
That is not bad luck. It is bad timing.
THE FOURTH FROST RULE
Whenever possible, make one resource do two jobs:
1. improve your account,
2. score in an event for rewards you can use later.
DO NOT CONFUSE SAVING WITH STALLING
Event timing is not permission to stop progressing for weeks while you wait for the perfect leaderboard.
Ask whether waiting has a real cost.
WHEN TO WAIT:
- if the upgrade is not blocking your next unlock,
- if the troops are not needed immediately,
- if the hero star does not change an important march right now,
- if an event is close and will reward the same action.
PUSH NOW:
- if the upgrade unlocks a major system,
- if a troop tier is holding back your account,
- if your alliance needs the progression for an upcoming event,
- if waiting creates more lost value than the event reward is worth.
The goal is efficient progress, not saving just for the sake of saving.
BUILDING AND RESEARCH
Construction and research can consume enormous amounts of time and speedups. Before starting a major upgrade, do not just ask whether you have enough speedups — ask what you can do to make the original timer smaller before it ever starts.
Depending on what your account and state have unlocked, construction time can be affected by several systems, including:
- Chief Orders such as Double Time,
- Pets,
- Heroes,
- Island bonuses,
- Presidential buffs,
- Presidential appointments,
- and other progression bonuses you have unlocked.
You will not have access to all of these as a new player. That is okay. The important habit is learning to check what you do have before pressing Upgrade.
Double Time is especially important to understand: activate it before you start the construction upgrade. Turning it on after construction has already begun does not retroactively reduce the time remaining.
Later, Pets add another layer. The Cave Hyena has a construction-related skill and is another reason to check your available bonuses before starting a long upgrade.
Research has its own collection of bonuses and time reductions as your account develops. You do not need to memorize every source in Start Here. Learn the habit first and the deeper Academy lessons can teach you what applies to each system.
CHECK BONUSES → ACTIVATE BUFFS → START THE UPGRADE → USE SPEEDUPS
If you already intend to complete a major upgrade, also check the event calendar before dumping large blocks of speedups into it. That can turn a normal progression push into extra rewards without spending anything beyond what you already planned to use.
TRAINING AND PROMOTION
Your troop training queues should be running as close to nonstop as possible. You will always need troops.
Do not leave a training queue empty just because you are waiting for an event.
What you generally want to save for scoring events are your training speedups. Let normal training time keep producing troops every day, then use saved speedups when that same time reduction can also earn event points.
When you are ready for a larger training push, check your available bonuses first. Training Capacity Enhance in City Buffs increases the number of troops you can train in a batch. Later, additional Chief Orders and other systems add more ways to improve troop training.
You do not need to memorize every training bonus now. Start building the same habit:
CHECK BONUSES → ACTIVATE BUFFS → TRAIN OR PROMOTE → USE SPEEDUPS STRATEGICALLY
TRAIN CONSTANTLY. SPEED UP STRATEGICALLY.
Do not be in a hurry to promote every lower-tier troop as soon as a new tier unlocks. Frost generally recommends continuing to train new troops and holding most troop promotion until you reach T9. Once T9 is unlocked, cleaning up those older troop tiers becomes much more worthwhile.
The full reasoning, exceptions, promotion strategy, later troop tiers, and advanced troop systems belong in Troops Academy. For now, remember: unlocking a new troop tier does not automatically mean you should stop building troop count to promote everything below it.
HERO AND GEAR UPGRADES
Hero shards, gear materials, Chief Gear materials, Charms, and similar progression systems are especially good candidates for timing because they can often sit safely for a short period.
The important part is having the upgrade plan before the event begins.
Do not let the event decide what you upgrade.
Let your account plan decide what you upgrade, then let the event reward the timing.
SVS SHOULD ANCHOR YOUR CALENDAR
As your state gets older, State vs State Preparation becomes one of the most important places to apply everything in this lesson.
For F2P and low spenders especially, smaller events should not automatically empty the resources you have been saving for SvS.
That does not mean ignoring every event between SvS cycles. It means knowing which resources you can comfortably spend now and which ones already have a bigger job waiting for them.
A higher spender may have enough resource income to compete heavily in events such as King of Icefield and still arrive at SvS prepared. A limited spender often has to choose.
Do not let a smaller reward convince you to sacrifice the resource pile you were building for a more important one.
THE EVENT TRAP
Events can also make bad spending feel smart.
"I got points for it" does not make a bad upgrade good.
If you would not want the upgrade without the leaderboard, think carefully before doing it for the leaderboard.
Event rewards should improve the value of a good decision — not justify a bad one.
A SIMPLE TIMING FRAMEWORK
For any big spend, ask:
NEED
Do I already need this upgrade?
TIMING
Can it wait without hurting progression?
EVENT
Is there an event coming that scores this action?
RETURN
Are the rewards meaningful enough to justify waiting?
OPPORTUNITY COST
Would using this resource now block something more important later?
WHAT I WOULD TELL A NEW PLAYER
The players who look like they always have resources are often not earning dramatically more than everyone else.
They are simply spending with a calendar instead of spending whenever the game flashes a button at them.
You do not need to become an event spreadsheet robot.
You just need to stop accidentally using tomorrow's scoring resources today.
FROST'S TIMING QUESTIONS
Before a large spend or speedup push, ask:
1. Is this already part of my progression plan?
2. Does waiting actually hurt my account?
3. Is SvS or another worthwhile scoring event close?
4. Have I checked and activated every useful bonus available to me before starting?
5. Am I using specialized speedups before General Speedups where possible?
6. Am I spending because the upgrade is valuable, or because the leaderboard tempted me?
7. Will spending this now leave me short for something more important?
